SCIENCE IS
THE MISSION.
DISCOVERY IS THE OUTPUT.

Sri Lanka Space Science is the public-facing science mission directorate for understanding the universe, the Sun, Earth, planetary worlds, exoplanets and the data systems that connect them. Research asks the question. Space Science organizes the national scientific story, evidence, public access and discovery experience.

Six science missions

ONE COUNTRY.
SIX WINDOWS ON REALITY.

Space science is bigger than rockets. It spans fundamental astrophysics, heliophysics, Earth systems, planetary science, the search for other worlds and the open-data infrastructure that makes discovery repeatable.

01

Universe Science

Stars, stellar evolution, variable systems, galaxies, astrophysics, spectroscopy, asteroseismology and the physics of the observable universe.

STARS / GALAXIES / PHYSICS
02

Heliophysics

The Sun, solar radio bursts, energetic events, solar-terrestrial connections and the science behind space-weather effects.

SUN / RADIO / SPACE WEATHER
03

Earth Science

Climate, land, water, agriculture, forests, coasts, cities and hazards studied through remote sensing, GIS and Earth-system methods.

EARTH / CLIMATE / REMOTE SENSING
04

Planetary Science

The Moon, planets, surfaces, spectra, morphology, comparative planetology and the physical processes that shape other worlds.

MOON / PLANETS / SURFACES
05

Exoplanets & Life

Transit signals, planetary systems, stellar characterization, nearby worlds, habitability questions and the search for planets beyond our Solar System.

EXOPLANETS / HABITABILITY
06

Open Science & Data

Public datasets, reproducible code, science communication, AI-assisted analysis, evidence standards and pathways for students and citizens to participate.

DATA / CODE / PUBLIC SCIENCE

THE DATA SHOULD
FEEL ALIVE.

The science console separates three evidence streams: universe observations, solar radio science and Earth-system data, then connects them through open methods and public explanation.

Science Question Explorer

START WITH A QUESTION THAT CAN LOSE.

A scientific question is useful only if evidence could show it is wrong. Choose a domain, evidence mode, audience and output. The explorer routes the question to the right science desk and methodology.

  • Question before answer.
  • Evidence before narrative.
  • Uncertainty before certainty.
  • Reproducibility before virality.
  • Public explanation after scientific review.
Interactive science labs

DON'T JUST READ IT.
TOUCH THE EVIDENCE.

These labs use synthetic data to teach the scientific pattern behind two real Sri Lankan science strengths: exoplanet transit analysis and solar-radio observation.

Lab 01 • Exoplanet Transit

MAKE A PLANET CROSS A STAR.

Transit photometry measures the small drop in apparent stellar brightness as a planet passes in front of its star. Change the synthetic transit depth and noise to see how detectability changes.

Lab 02 • Solar Radio

SEE A RADIO BURST AS A SPECTRUM.

CALLISTO instruments record radio intensity over frequency and time. This synthetic spectrogram demonstrates the visual logic of a drifting radio-burst feature without pretending to display live instrument data.

THE STORY ALREADY
HAS DISCOVERIES.

Sri Lanka Space Science surfaces real scientific achievements and facilities with institutional attribution, turning them into a visible national science narrative.

EXOPLANETS • ACCIMT / UNIVERSITY OF COLOMBO • 2019

Two planets discovered using NASA K2 mission data

ACCIMT says its scientists and University of Colombo researcher Dr. Chandana Jayaratne contributed to the discovery of two planets orbiting a star in Virgo, describing it as the first planetary system discovered by Sri Lankan scientists.

ASTRONOMY • 45 CM CASSEGRAIN

Sri Lanka's largest optical telescope facility

ACCIMT describes its 45 cm GOTO Cassegrain telescope, commissioned after the 1996 UN/ESA Basic Space Science workshop, as the largest optical telescope facility available in Sri Lanka for research and education.

HELIOPHYSICS • CALLISTO

Solar radio observation from Sri Lanka

ACCIMT operates a CALLISTO solar-radio station in Sri Lanka. Its locally designed log-periodic antenna covers 45–600 MHz, supporting solar-radio-burst science, education and outreach.

EARTH SCIENCE • RS/GIS

Science applied to agriculture, forests, climate and health

ACCIMT's Space Applications Division lists projects and research across agricultural drought, crop monitoring, forest condition, land-use mapping, marine/coastal applications, health/GIS and environmental remote sensing.

SCIENCE IS A CHAIN
OF ACCOUNTABILITY.

Every public result should be traceable back through the question, observation, method and uncertainty.

01

Question

State what you are trying to learn and what outcome would disprove the idea.

02

Observe

Use telescope, radio, remote-sensing, archive, simulation or other defined evidence.

03

Analyze

Document data treatment, algorithms, assumptions and statistical choices.

04

Validate

Calibration, uncertainty, comparison, ground truth, replication or external checks.

05

Review

Invite technical criticism before presenting a result as established knowledge.

06

Explain

Publish evidence, methods and a clear public explanation that separates result from inference.

Public science engine

MAKE DISCOVERY
PART OF CULTURE.

ACCIMT currently runs astronomy training and space-science education, while Sri Lanka's NSF has active 2026 science-education, publication and research-support pathways. Sri Lanka Space Science turns that ecosystem into a public participation layer.

01

School Science

Space-science modules, telescope literacy, water rockets, remote sensing and teacher-ready explainers.

02

Citizen Observation

Sky logs, meteor campaigns, Sun-safe observing, data interpretation and community science nights.

03

Open Data

Curated datasets, notebooks, methods, visualizations and reproducible public demonstrations.

04

Science Publishing

Research explainers, posters, visual abstracts, publication pathways and translation of technical work for the public.

2026 science runway

THE NATIONAL RESEARCH PIPELINE IS ACTIVE.

Sri Lanka's National Science Foundation currently lists 2026 competitive research grants, postdoctoral support, publication grants, science-education/popularization calls and technology-development/start-up support. Those pathways can feed deeper space-science capability when matched to strong questions and institutions.

Science vs Research

THIS SITE IS THE SCIENCE FRONT DOOR.

SriLankaSpaceResearch.com is the deeper laboratory/proposal/publication institution. SriLankaSpaceScience.com is the mission-facing scientific map: the disciplines, evidence, discoveries, public labs, data literacy and national science story people should be able to explore without needing to read a grant proposal first.

Locked identity standard

THE LION WITH THE SWORD SITS AT THE CENTER OF SCIENCE.

Every Sri Lanka/Lanka-related and Mars-related branch in this project uses the lion animal holding a sword as a primary visual motif. For Sri Lanka Space Science, the lion anchors the official seal, science wheel and directorate identity. The Southern Cross remains the required constellation whenever stars appear.
